With all the attention on the ink on a tattoo, it’s easy to forget how important it is to be able to cut it off.
But if you’re not familiar with the procedure, here’s what you need to know about how to do it safely.1.
Cut the skin at the rootCutting the skin can be done with either a scissors or an anesthetic-treated razor blade.
But if you need a razor, make sure to get one that has a sharp blade.
Also, if you are using an anesthetized blade, make certain that the blade is attached to a retractable blade that has been designed to make a cut without disturbing the tattoo.2.
Don’t put too much pressure on the skinDon’t put pressure on your skin, even if you want to.
It’s not worth the risk, experts say.
When it comes to tattoo removal, pressure is the biggest concern.
So avoid any unnecessary pressure when cutting off the tattoo, experts tell CNN.3.
Cut your tattoo on a flat surfaceCutting off the skin from the tattoo can be accomplished with a flat cutting surface like a pizza box or even a piece of paper.
If you’re going to be cutting your tattoo with a razor blade, choose a blade that is designed to cut through a thin sheet of skin, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.4.
Don “cut it off” at the bottom of the tattooInstead of cutting the skin, “cut” it off from the rest of your tattoo.
“Cutting it off at the top of the skin is the safest way to do this,” said Jennifer Fagan, a plastic surgeon and associate professor of plastic surgery at the University of Utah.
The tattoo can then be removed by hand.5.
Make sure to remove all excess skinBefore you start cutting off a large tattoo, make a note of where all the skin has been removed and what is left of the original tattoo, Fagan said.
If it is still visible, you should continue to trim away the skin as you proceed, she said.
“Keep trimming until all skin is gone.”6.
Wash the tattooAfter you’ve trimmed away all the excess skin, wash the tattoo with soap and water.
“Don’t be afraid to use soap to clean the tattoo,” Fagan added.
If there is any blood, you may need to use a dry cleanser to remove it.
“If you have some blood left, you can use a bleach solution to wash it away,” she added.7.
Do not remove the tattoo without removing all the blood from the woundDo not remove a tattoo without cutting the tattoo skin, experts advise.
“The best way to get rid of the blood is to leave it on the tattoo for a long time,” Fagnan said.
She added that this will take a while to remove the blood.8.
Clean up any remaining inkYou may have to wait a few days for the tattoo to completely heal before you can remove the ink, according Fagan.
You may need a disposable tattoo removal kit, such as a disposable needle, for this step.
If the tattoo is already healed, you don’t have to worry about leaving any ink.9.
Clean and apply sunscreenWhile a tattoo can get infected with blood or other contaminants, you shouldn’t let it get infected.
“Wash your tattoo and apply a layer of sunscreen, such a light layer to keep the tattoo protected from the sun,” Faggan said, adding that this should protect the tattoo’s surface from getting damaged during removal.
